WHEN RAINS COME

When rains come
deer lie down in the field and
give their warmth to the waking earth.

When rains come
deer lie down in the field and
shelter their tender parts against her breast.

When rains come
deer press their hearts and their spleens
into the matted leaves, the faded grasses.

When rains come
old debris softens and parts.  Then deer
dark as wet bark mass in the field.

When rains come
green things needle up to the air and
dark deer mass in the field, renewed.
